A New Virtual Phone System Alternative

J.R. October 9, 2008 3

It was back in May when we started evaluating Virtual PBX options for our own office. But recently we became aware of a newly launched software for one of the most popular voice over IP (VoIP) phone services: PrettyMay Inc. announced their new Skype PBX software in late September. They call it PrettyMay Call Center for Skype (PMCCS).

The PMCCS is available with either a Standard License (for $200), or a Professional License (for $500). That may sound pretty steep at first, but that is the one-time fee for the purchase of the software – there are no monthly fees with PMCCS, and the price includes three years of free support and free upgrades for life.

We currently use RingCentral as our Virtual PBX provider since they offer both VoIP and PBX services, but we have also been longtime users of Skype for frequent communications with contacts overseas. Now that our favorite VoIP service has an affordable PBX service, we can’t help but wonder if the grass is greener on the other side.

It is too soon to tell if we will consider switching from glitchy RingCentral; we would like to see some reviews and/or feedback of the PMCCS before we make any decisions. If you have experience with both, chime in and let us know if the grass is actually greener, or if the same weeds exist on every lawn.

Personally, I prefer Gizmo to Skype. It’s cleaner, cheaper, and eats less bandwidth and processing power. Bad luck picking Ringcentral as your test subject, too. Try Virtual PBX instead – I started using them in September and have had excellent results so far.

Thanks for the tip on Gizmo. And yes, “bad luck” with RingCentral so far. Seems their product has potential, but isn’t evolving fast enough to keep up with the competition.

We have been using RingCentral since 2006, has worked for us great, but for $300 a year Prettymay looks very interesting and much cheaper.
